The results of the Culpepper’s Remedy Poetry Competition 2019

The results of the Culpepper’s Remedy Poetry Competition 2019 are as follows.

1st Place

Cull by Martin Bradshaw

2nd Place

Mountain by Naomi Vera

Commended entries

Wedge by Diane Jackman

Log Boat by Pauline May

Small Duties by Noel King

There were over 200 entries and we read through them all gradually reducing them to a long list of 20, the five poems above where the final short list and it was very difficult to select a poem from these that could be declared a “winner” and a “runner up”.  But I had to find these two poems and in the end this came down to the poems that left the biggest impression. “Cull”, dealt with death in many forms, and was revealing at times shocking and surprising. “Mountain” also left a big impression and was a lovely evocation of a mountain trek. So two very different poems but both outstanding in their own way. The three commended poems where also fine poems and deserved to be mentioned.
